Discipleship Beyond Religion (Sept 17, 2025) - Wednesday Night Bible Session

Discipleship versus Denominational Religion

  • Pastor emphasized that salvation costs nothing but discipleship will cost everything

  • Jesus came to make disciples rather than create denominations like Baptists, Catholics, Pentecostals, or Jehovah's Witnesses
  • Churches today have abandoned discipleship because true disciples become a threat to leaders with hidden agendas who prefer to keep people bound in ignorance
  • Many religious institutions use programs instead of discipleship to maintain control over their congregations

Fear of the Lord as Foundation of Wisdom

  • Group reading of Proverbs 9:8-10 established that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom

  • Fear in this context means reverence rather than being afraid, similar to the respect shown when a judge enters a courtroom
  • Disciples must be open and teachable learners who ask questions to avoid making mistakes as they mature spiritually

Jesus as Teacher and Example for Disciples

  • Matthew 4:19 was read showing Jesus calling fishermen to follow Him and become fishers of men

  • Jesus used analogies familiar to His audience, comparing catching fish to reaching people for God's kingdom
  • Leaders must bear fruit and lead by example rather than followers supporting pastors whose personal lives contradict their teaching

Prayer as Primary Discipline for Disciples

  • Matthew 6:9-13 presented the Lord's Prayer as the first lesson Jesus taught His disciples

  • Daily prayer involving surrender to God's will interrupts personal agendas and allows God to orchestrate divine appointments
  • Praying "let your kingdom come" means accepting that God may place challenging people and situations in one's path for spiritual growth

Self-Denial as Daily Requirement

  • Luke 9:23 established that disciples must deny themselves daily and take up their cross to follow Christ

  • Self-denial means restraining oneself from pleasures that lead to destruction and recognizing that God's will and ways are superior to personal desires
  • Christians often fail by putting themselves in compromising situations before they are spiritually mature enough to handle them

Body as Temple of the Holy Spirit

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 taught that believers' bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and must be treated accordingly

  • This means avoiding smoking, inappropriate tattoos, immodest dress, and reckless health practices
  • Christians cannot pray for health while simultaneously engaging in behaviors that damage their bodies

Putting Off Old Behaviors and Attitudes

  • Ephesians 4:22 commanded believers to put away old patterns of thinking, speaking, and acting that dishonor God

  • This includes controlling attitudes, avoiding certain music and movies, and refusing to participate in inappropriate conversations
  • Believers must reach a point where others know they will encounter the same consistent person regardless of circumstances

Daily Devotional Life Requirements

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and James 1:5-7 established that disciples must maintain daily prayer, Bible reading, studying, and fasting

  • Many Christians neglect their Bibles for extended periods, treating them like abandoned children
  • Believers should seek God's wisdom first before consulting other people about their problems and situations

Faithfulness in All Situations and Relationships

  • John 8:31 and Colossians 3:16 emphasized that disciples demonstrate faithfulness everywhere they go rather than hiding their faith

  • Christians should give God credit for their blessings and maintain consistent behavior whether at work, home, or in unfamiliar places
  • Relationships with other believers reflect one's walk with God and require treating others with respect and avoiding discord

Heart for Witnessing and Evangelism

  • 2 Timothy 4:16 highlighted that disciples must have a passion for sharing the gospel and giving testimony at any time and place

  • Believers should view themselves as walking billboards for Christ and see divine appointments in everyday encounters
  • God strategically places people in believers' paths as opportunities to share the message of salvation

Regular Church Attendance as Non-Negotiable

  • Hebrews 10:25 established that true disciples attend church regularly for fellowship, accountability, and support

  • Claims of serving God at home while avoiding church attendance represent deception and self-justification
  • Church provides the community love and spiritual connection that cannot be replicated through individual worship alone

Distinction Between Christians and Disciples

  • Acts 11:26 revealed that the term "Christian" originated in Antioch as a label given by non-believers to identify Christ followers

  • The term was initially meant as an insult rather than a designation chosen by believers themselves
  • Jesus commanded making disciples rather than Christians, indicating that not all who claim Christianity demonstrate true discipleship characteristics

Next Steps

  • The study will continue exploring the differences between cultural Christianity and authentic discipleship

  • Participants are expected to maintain daily devotional practices including prayer, Bible reading, and fasting while applying the principles of self-denial and faithfulness in their daily lives
  • Groups will continue meeting to study assigned scriptures and develop deeper understanding of discipleship requirements versus superficial religious identification

Key Points

  • Salvation costs nothing but discipleship will cost everything, as Jesus came to make disciples rather than create denominations like Baptists, Catholics, or Pentecostals.
  • Churches today have abandoned discipleship because making true disciples creates a threat to leaders with hidden agendas who prefer to keep people bound in ignorance.
  • Disciples are learners who must be open and teachable, requiring reverence for the Lord as the foundation of wisdom according to Proverbs 9:8-10.
  • Jesus modeled leadership by example when calling his disciples to follow him and become fishers of men, emphasizing that people should not follow leaders who bear no spiritual fruit.
  • Prayer life forms the foundation of discipleship, with Jesus teaching his disciples the Lord's Prayer as the primary way to communicate with and submit to God daily.
  • Discipleship requires putting Christ first in all areas of life rather than selectively choosing which areas to surrender to God's control.
  • Self-denial must happen daily as disciples take up their cross, restraining themselves from pleasures that lead to self-destruction and trusting God's will over their own.
  • Believers' bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit according to 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, requiring proper care and modest presentation rather than reckless behavior.
  • Disciples must put away old sinful behaviors and attitudes as commanded in Ephesians 4:22, taking personal responsibility rather than blaming circumstances or other people.
  • Daily devotional time including prayer, Bible reading, studying, and fasting is critical for discipleship, as believers cannot go extended periods without these spiritual disciplines.
  • Faithfulness must be demonstrated in every situation and location, with disciples consistently representing God through their speech and behavior regardless of their environment.
  • Fellowship and regular church attendance are necessary for discipleship according to Hebrews 10:25, providing accountability and support that cannot be replaced by serving God alone at home.
  • Christians and disciples represent different categories, as the term "Christian" originated in Antioch as an insult from worldly people, while Jesus commanded making disciples.
  • Disciples must live lives that reflect their faith through practical actions like environmental stewardship, honest business practices, and careful speech that honors God.
